Day 4

Thursday 31st. “Blue Skies – Shining on me – Nothing but Blue Skies – Do I see!”  A good day for Willie Nelson, but a challenging one for a soaring contest. Hard to complain about such a beautiful day really, and if it develops like yesterday did it could be a cracker. Two quite different tasks have been set today, with the Club Class basically doing a big circle to Rangitaiki, Poihipi, Kaingaroa and down to the Boyd (or within 40k of the Boyd), while the MSC contest involves a big northest-sout...

Day 3

A great day yesterday, and some great scores on the board. Mike Strathern in an ASW20 continued his good form from the Central Plateau contest to take maximum points in the Club Class, followed by Bob Gray and Steve Wallace who were separated by less than 40 points. Keith Essex in the immaculate ASG29 took out the MSC contest, closely followed by Pat Driessen and Sebastian Kawa. Today has dawned fine and beaut, although a bit too blue to be ideal, and forecast to be the hottest day of the year;...

Day 2

Tuesday 29th.   It’s a beauty! At last a great day for a contest, and everyone is away for a start. The task today takes us Northeast to Murupara, West towards Te Kuiti, South to the Chateau Tongariro and back.  It’s fitting that Tim Bromhead in BA should be showing out well as we get close to the halfway point, because everyone is enjoying watching progress on the tracking system that Tim has spent many hours setting up. The Contest Director is loving it – he even had a trailer o...

Comp Day 1

This morning we officially started our contest with a formal welcome from Anna Park of the Taupo District Council, followed by the compulsory safety briefing from Bill Kendall, CFI of the Taupo club, and the daily weather briefing from David Hirst. David had mixed news for us with decreasing winds and increasing temperatures on the positive side, but only weak thermals and convergences in the vicinity not sounding quite so good. However the task setters decided to make the most of the prevailing...

Sunday 27/1/19

Club Class Nationals/MSC contest, Centennial Park     As early as last Friday the camping ground at Centennial Park was starting to fill up, so now trailers are lining the fenceline, and visitors are taking to the air to familiarise themselves with our Central Plateau playground. One visitor in particular is creating more interest than most, as we are privileged to be hosting the World Gliding Champion, Sebastian Kawa from Poland. Sebastian flew a famil flight with Trev Terry in the Duo Discus o...
