Incorporating the ‘Cape Gauntlet’
The Western Cape Regionals will be held at the Cape gliding Club (CGC), flying out of the Worcester Airfield, FAWC from 23 Jan to 30 Jan 2021. Sat 23 Jan will be a practice day, with the 1st day being on 24 Jan. Closing briefing giving will be on Sat 30 Jan at 6pm on the airfield.
The WCR management team:
Regionals Director: Peter Farrell
Safety Officer: Findlay Smith
Chief Launch Marshall: Alison Navarro
Soaring Spot: Peter Wyld
Weather Forecasting: Ian Forbes, Colin Sindle
Task setting: Martin Grunert
Planning & logistics: Kevin Mitchell
Scrutineering / Admin: Juliana Blom
Safety Briefing: There will be a mandatory safety briefing on Sat 23 Jan at 6pm in Chris Hughes’ Hangar adjacent to the taxiway. Registration and scrutineering of required documentation by Juliana will take place before the safety briefing. You may also submit your documentation electronically to Juliana at firstname.lastname@example.org
As we are holding this WCR during stage 3 Lock Down restrictions we will have to conform to social distancing protocols as always. You will have to register your attendance on the airfield and have your temperature checked. Spectators will not be allowed but crew will be admitted.
Daily briefings will be virtual in nature consisting of the usual Weather, Tasks, Safety issues and previous day’s winners and will be distributed on WhatsApp daily. Two WhatsApp groups will be set up. Firstly, a general group for 2-way discussion called ‘WCR Discussion’ and secondly a broadcast group (one-way traffic only) for distribution of tasks and briefings called ‘WCR Info’ These WhatsApp groups will become the primary / official communication medium between WCR management and contestants. Once these groups are in place please let us know if you need any crew etc added to the groups.
Air Space and Waypoints: We will be using the same files as for the WCR 2020 and are available on Soaring Spot. The Airspace file is south_africa_2018-11-01.xxx and the waypoint file is cap20a.xxx
The airfield radio frequency is 124.800 Mhz and the task frequency is 123.400 Mhz
Flarm: As we will be flying most of the tasks on the ridges FLARM is mandatory for WCR and you must have updated your FLARM software within the last year. Further, you are required to register your FLARM device on OGN at both the following places: https://ddb.glidernet.org/ and http://wiki.glidernet.org/ddb-list This will be used for ensuring you have a FLARM, that it is switched on, for Safety reasons and, Recording flight times.
If you are not from CGC, to add your Flarm details to the OGN Devices database, create an account here: https://ddb.glidernet.org/?a=u and "Add Device" for each of your planes' Flarms (or PilotAware / FANETs / OGN) devices.
After 24 hours or so, your correct planes' registrations should start showing up (on glider tracker websites, KTRAX, OGN Viewer, etc.)
If you get an " This device is already registered" message and the OGN database shows the registration as ZS-XXXN or similar, then please contact Colin on email@example.com for him to remove it from the CGC account. Alternatively, send him the plane type, proper registration, and CN number.
Please read the two published documents below regarding soaring the Worcester ridges (copy the entire link to your browser). It’ll give you a good idea of some of the ‘secrets’ to increasing your speed, and well as getting home safely. And, of course, experiencing what has become to be known and the ‘Worcester Magic’
