COPPA INTERNAZIONALE DEL MEDITERRANEO 2014

14 August

Today it's the last day of the competition. Here in Rieti, it was a really windy day with gusts up to 20kts. At 3:00pm the director of the competition decided to cancel today’s flights. The closing ceremony will be taken tonight at 7:00pm, with the assignment of the prizes to the winner of each class.

At the award ceremony of the CIM 2014 there was a climate of satisfaction and friendship, thanks to the experience of the big cheese of the contest, Franca Vorano. The race has been great fun and emotional for most of us, it has also contributed to create a spirit of union and hilarity, that animated the closing ceremony. The President of the Aeroclub of Rieti Enrico Bagnoli, made a speech, to thank you the director of the contest, it’s staff and all the participants. Alvaro De Orleans Borbone, as a member of the International Gliding Commission says his thank you to Franca and all the organization, too. A particular thank you to the pilot Andrea Ferrero, for his help with the weather briefings. After the awards delivery, pictures were taken, of the guys raising their cups over the podium. Many of the competitors left the airfield heading back to their countries whilst others  will stay to take part to the next race. Others will be arriving in the next days. On the 8th day of the CIM was a long wait for the final decision: club class is the only flying! At 15, the gliders were back to the trailers. 15 knots from south-south/west. ### Today weather conditions were very good with 2m/s and strong wind from south-west that allow to fly straight on the ridges. Only the club class flew, today. The start was very difficult because good conditions arrived late in the afternoon. Many pilots have given up after a few kilometers, only Luca Urbani and Daniele Martinelli finished the task, they found very strong climbing values​: from 4 up to 7 m/s!  Clara

Today weather conditions were very difficult for gliding: same pilots did only 180 Km. At about 14.00, in grid, we delivered an alternative task for standard, 15m, 18m, 20m, open, it was 300 km instead of 380 km. Not many pilots will complete the task, we will see the ranking … Good evening ! Clara

Yesterday was a very difficult day for many pilots (about 8 outlanding). It was important to choose the right moment to start and to choose where to go. Others gliders were very fast: up to 132 km/h. The ceiling’s cumulus was up to 3000m and there was convergence: they could fly fast and straight on. Ben Flewett says: “ Sky full of power!”.  Today it’s a rest day because of bad weather conditions, there is a bad coverage in the sky. Tomorrow will be a competition day. WiFi is still not working...

Today we have problems with wifi. The weather is very good, from the airfield we can see height cumulus over Teminillo mountain. There is no more humidity in the air! Take off started at 13.00. Gliders have a task of about 400km. Forecast preview bases cumulus around 3000m. Tomorrow it seems we’ll have good conditions, too. Today the pilots have been assigned an area task of 2.5 hours, between Villa Vallelonga and Foligno. The finish line was a 5kms cylinder, just like yesterday. It’s been the fourth day of competition: which means that the CIM can be considered valid, as far as regards the international ranking (three valid rounds is the minimum). The conditions were quite exciting along the task assigned, with strong thermals spread almost everywhere, infact most of the pilots have reported values up to 3.5 mete...

Today the Director of the competition (Franca Vorano) in collaboration with weather man, decided to assign the same task to all the classes except the club . For the first time after many years, the landings were made on runways 34, due to the gusty winds coming from North/West (15kts average intensity), supposedly caused by the arrival of a new perturbation. Strong thermals have developed everywhere along the task and according to the pilots, winds were favourable for dynamic flying. Almost all the gliders reached the southern turning point (Pescasseroli) fairly quickly. However it took them longer to come back north, due to the weakening of the vertical currents.
