NZ Club Class National Gliding Championships Jan 2019

Taupo, New Zealand,   27 January 2019 – 9 February 2019

Day 4

Thursday 31st.

“Blue Skies – Shining on me – Nothing but Blue Skies – Do I see!”  A good day for Willie Nelson, but a challenging one for a soaring contest. Hard to complain about such a beautiful day really, and if it develops like yesterday did it could be a cracker.

Two quite different tasks have been set today, with the Club Class basically doing a big circle to Rangitaiki, Poihipi, Kaingaroa and down to the Boyd (or within 40k of the Boyd), while the MSC contest involves a big northest-southwest stretch from Ngamotu Rail Crossing (near Mt. Edgcumbe) all the way down to Taihape. Wow! Good luck guys!

Yesterday turned out to be a boomer, with Mike Strathern once again showing the way in the Club Class, ahead of Tim Bromhead and Bob Gray. In the MSC contest Pat Driessen in the JS1 just managed to head off Sebastian Kawa in the Duo, with Nigel Mcphee going really well for third place, just 0.3 km/h faster than Keith Essex in the ASG29.

Big news today is that Terry Delore is planning to attempt a flight tomorrow from Omarama to Taupo! Apparently conditions are looking good for a crossing of Cook Strait, so there’s lots of eager anticipation here as well as lots of crossed fingers. Go Terry!

Whoops! Steve Foreman uploaded the wrong task! In Taupo we have an education system to cover just such an occasion. (See Gallery photos)
