South African Nationals 2011

South Africa,   10 December 2011 – 22 December 2011

Mon. 19th December – 8th Contest Day

As the day starts for the 8th contest day, a word of thanks to the various people behind the scenes who assist in making the Nationals operate and work – the tug pilots Connie, Peter aka Boris, Rene, Will, Oscar and sometimes Uys.  Sven doing the daily met. reporting, and Laurens dealing with safety issues.  Also Boris, who is doing the scoring and ensuring that all the information gets onto the www.soaringspot.com website, and to Steve aka Taffy for
adding my words also to the website.

A big thank you too to Corné of Memory Lane Restaurant, who is providing the food and drinks at the airfield and will be doing the closing dinner as well.  And last but not least to Ian Buchanan for his contest directing in a relaxed yet firm manner – not an easy undertaking with glider pilots, who invariably all have their own opinions and ideas!

This morning Uys gave an interview on the RSG radio, the text of which we will try to put on SoaringSpot in due course.

Yesterday’s task saw Oscar, Attie and Uys leading the Open/18m. class, whilst Konrad Stark won the Club class day on handicap with Wayne and Stephan 2nd & 3rd respectively.

Overall results at this stage Open/18m. class show Oscar in the lead, followed by Ronald Termaat 2nd, and Arne Boye-Møller in 3rd place.  In the Club class Wayne Schmidt leads, with Stephan v.d. Berg and Konrad Stark 2nd & 3rd.

Another blue skies and sunny day in Welkom and this time with a light south easterly wind.  Conditions are looking good to the NW, though there is still the inflow of moist air from the east and down from Botswana.  The dew point is about 9°, and temperature 32.5°.  Trigger temperature is 30.4°, and clouds expected to be 3/8ths cu at 12 000 ft.   Overall  conditions are expected to be similar to yesterday.

A number of gliders were taken to the 25 runway early and now need to be moved to 07 end.  1st launch expected to be 12 noon.
