South African Nationals 2011

South Africa,   10 December 2011 – 22 December 2011

Sat. 17th December – 6th Contest Day - Carol reports larger tasks

Apart from local visitors from Welkom yesterday, we have also had visits from other gliding people – Alan Lentle from Estcourt Club, Mike & Rob Atkinson from Magalies GC, as well as Marc Schroeder of France en route to fly at Gariep.  So Philippe, his brother, who was flying the glider, # SM, will no longer be flying at Welkom.

Being a public holiday yesterday, competitors were advised that perhaps many of the restaurants in town might be closed, so a good dinner was arranged here at the airfield. And it was a good dinner – meat, chicken, rice, vegetables, salad and a ‘to die for’ chocolate mousse cake with cream dessert.

This morning there is again a stiff breeze from the NE as well as some early morning low’ish cloud.  Am not sure whether this will increase or decrease, since Sven had told us it would be blue for at least a further day or two.  He believes that it will in fact dissipate.
There is now a high over Vryburg which is spreading to the NW.  A SWesterly flow is expected again in the late afternoon. There is moist air over Botswana streaming down into our area, hence the visible low cloud this morning.  Sven expects it to be blue today but perhaps some cloud at altitude, and then possibly 2/8 clouds tomorrow.  Today is warmer than yesterday 29.8° with a higher dewpoint 8°.  Lift expected to be 2.5 m/sec – 3 m/sec.
Once again a warning about airspace limits on the 1st and 2nd legs of the tasks, and also that there would be no final control point.  Tasks as follows:

Open/18m:
Task A 524.8 km. Petrus Steyn – Bamboesspruit – Finish NW
Task B 405.1 km. Edenville – Wolmaranstad – Finish NW

Club:
Task A 318.1 km.  Westleigh – Makwassie – Finish NW
Task B 250.1 km. Kroonstad – R27 – Finish NW

Gliders to be on the grid as soon as possible and a first launch expected at 11.30 a.m.
