2020 NSW State Championships

Lake Keepit, Australia,   14 November 2020 – 21 November 2020

Report - D3

Weatherman Mac Ichikawa (1M) gave regular updates to the grid as temperatures climbed and cloud departed the tasking area.  He reported conditions for the most part following the forecast.

Chris Bowman (PO) had a stellar day and perhaps achieving a personal best at 100.6kph, a mere 134 pts behind Sports day winner Allan Barnes (S7).  Chris reported: "It was a good day with fantastic thermals.  8-10kts repetitively with the only complaint being large areas of equivalent sink.  The sky was completely blue but no matter what we did, we kept managing to blunder into strong climbs.  I tracked along the edge of the Pilliga scrub, looking down on others more willing than I to venture deeper into that unlandable terrain.  It was a great day and tomorrow promises to be even better!"

One of those willing individuals was Kel Burgess (XBY).  Kel reported making a little mistake at the start and commencing the task earlier than was ideal.  He states: "I ran a great energy line along the edge of the Pilliga.  I passed up a strong climb to make up ground to the glider ahead, trying to take advantage of a marked thermal.  Sadly, they were marking _____ and I found myself regretting pushing on.  I had enough height to move deeper into the Pilliga in search of better and was rewarded with a 9 knotter.  I felt unstoppable coming home until I met with an area of massive sink by Rangari, almost landing out!  One last weak climb got me to the finish line to end a fantastic day.  No landouts among the fleet and a greaser of a landing.   Happy days!"

In 18m/Open, Mak Ichikawa (1M) knocked Bruce Taylor (QR) off his regular place on the podium with a 132.3kph performance.  Brad Edwards (1B) was between the two in 2nd place, with only 2.78kph separating the top three.
